Exploring the depths of one's identity and the crescendos of a career in music, Rony Fortich has woven a narrative that not only encompasses a life of artistic exploration but also of personal acceptance and influence within the LGBTQ+ community. From his initial unsure steps into music to now commanding performances that captivate thousands, Rony's story is a testament to talent and perseverance.
After graduating with a degree in accountancy—a field chosen under the gentle nudge of his mother who advocated for a stable career—he found his true calling lay elsewhere. Music had always been a part of his life, from DLSU chorale performances to informal jams with friends. However, it wasn't until he was hired as an audition pianist for Trumpets that he earned his first paycheck as a musician! This event marked the start of a journey that transitioned from hobby to vocation, driven by passion and his lure for the stage. He pursued performing on stage as a pianist and behind the red curtains of musical theater, until one day he was given the opportunity to apply for a job in the happiest place on Earth, Hong Kong Disneyland.
From 2005 to 2017, he was the musical director of Hong Kong Disneyland, a period he describes as absolutely life changing. It was here that he honed his skills not only as a musician but as a leader. Rony was responsible for overseeing a wide range of performances that adhered to the prestigious Disney quality standards. His musical director role demanded a deep understanding of musical intricacies, an ability to manage large teams, and the competence to blend diverse musical elements into cohesive performances that enchanted audiences from all over the globe. Among his most memorable experiences was composing the 5th anniversary theme song for Hong Kong Disneyland—a piece that won through blind judging within the Hong Kong Disneyland community, celebrating his ability to encapsulate the magic of Disneyland in a melody.
This achievement brought not only recognition by Bob Iger and famous personalities back home in the Philippines, but it earned Rony a spot in the international arena of music composers. Returning to Manila in 2017 rekindled his connection with local theater and live performances, where he continues to impact audiences and share his expertise through workshops and corporate events. His engagement with the Ayala Triangle lights and ASEAN closing ceremonies highlights his significant role in the cultural fabric of the Philippines.
Openly gay since the early 2000s, he has navigated his career with authenticity, often using his platform to support and inspire others in the LGBTQ+ community. His openness about his identity and his advocacy for visibility and acceptance have made him a beloved figure in both the music and LGBTQ+ communities.
As for the future, he aims to continue blending his creative talents with managerial acumen, both here and abroad. His vision extends beyond personal achievement to fostering a supportive atmosphere for upcoming musicians, regardless of their background. His journey underscores a universal message: authenticity and hard work pave the way to success. For aspiring musicians, his advice is clear—hone your craft, be a collaborative and supportive peer, and share your knowledge generously. Through his music and his actions, he hopes to convey a message of inclusivity and respect, proving that the arts can be a powerful medium for change and personal expression.
We applaud Rony Fortich for all his achievements for he illuminates the path for future musical directors and musicians looking to venture into another country for others, in both music and life.
