The music industry is undoubtedly composed of incredibly talented and creative individuals, but did you know that less than 8% of them are women? Throughout history, it has been commonplace for men to dominate most, if not all, industries that generate a significant amount of revenue. It has also been more common for a man to take center stage while a woman stands by his side when it comes to success and recognition. However, this storyline does not apply to Corinne de San Jose's world.
Despite not originally planning to become an audio engineer, Corinne has become an industry maverick in the audio and film industry thanks to her impressive skill set. Get to know Corinne de San Jose better: learn about her favorite apps, her work, and her wise words!
Being an audio engineer means living in a world with lots of intricacies and technicalities. But in simpler terms, Corinne described her work in three words. Those being, “Maximalist, Minimalist, and Expedient.”
As mentioned, audio engineering comes with many technicalities. But how do these technicalities manifest when it comes to audio engineering? We asked Corinne, “What applications/softwares do you use when post-processing audio?” There really are so many softwares and applications out there. But under Corinne’s roster, she mentioned two of her favorites, “ [I have] been working with ProTools since forever. I use the izotope noise reduction tools A LOT.” She added, “Every now and then I’ll use Logic if I want to ‘treat’ a sound effect more like music. Also I play around with guitar fx plugins (Soundtoys, etc) for the weirder stuff I need to do.”
When it comes to audio, there really is so little that we know. Audio is not all about the output, the craft that comes before it. In Corinne’s words, what not many know about her work is that she edits sound with her eyes. “I look at waveforms just as much as I listen to clips.” she said. When a track is recorded on an audio application, take Logic Pro X, the track outputs waveforms. Imagine ocean waves but drawn within a pill-like shape. Audio waveforms are just like ocean waves, when it’s big, it’s loud – it’s small, it’s soft.
It's inspiring to see Corinne's success and recognition not just within loudBox Studios but also outside of it, such as her solo exhibit "Lazy Projectors". It's a testament to her creativity and versatility as an artist. Her personal favorite project, "Midnight In A Perfect World", piques curiosity and leaves us wanting to know more.
Corinne’s presence is strongly felt in the audio industry. As a woman who is sought out due to her success and accomplishments, we had to get some advice. It's great to hear Corinne's advice for aspiring audio engineers. Corinne mentioned that “Sound is not all technical. Practice deep listening. Read more. Watch a lot of films. Listen to all kinds of music.” And perhaps most importantly, staying humble and continuing to learn by asking questions and seeking out guidance from those with more experience is key to growth and success in any field. Corinne's success in the audio industry is a testament to the importance of both technical knowledge and creativity, as well as the value of collaboration and seeking out opportunities to work with others who share your passion.
