The process of making music can take many different forms, and for Xeric Tan, his process is unique. While some musicians start with lyrics and build melodies around them, Xeric takes a different approach. He considers himself a producer and arranger first, and his process typically begins with a beat that evolves into a melody.
His ability to bring together different elements and collaborate with other musicians has allowed him to create a unique sound that sets him apart in the music industry.
Composing a song may seem simple at first - you make a beat, layer another beat on top, add a few words, and voila! You have a song, right? It may seem simple, but what makes a song truly great is the added production and the ability to manipulate various instruments and their beats into a beautiful symphony.
Xeric Tan is the orchestrator behind many of the ads you hear today. While he doesn't work with a 20-piece orchestra, he's able to create beautiful music using instrument packages in various audio software applications. We asked Xeric about the basic software tools he uses when recording a song, and he told us that he relies on Logic Pro X, Serum, and Splice.
Music production is a popular term nowadays, as many individuals are self-taught in this field. However, being knowledgeable about the resources available and the basic steps to getting started is crucial. While it can be an expensive hobby or profession, Xeric recommends “For beginners using Apple, start with GarageBand”, an easy beginner app that's built into every Macbook or iPad. Once you're ready to take your music production to the next level, he added, “Transition to Logic Pro X.”
Working on a more advanced platform unlocks different resources and avenues to create a more refined and technical sound. Xeric loves cradle's "The God Particle" for mixing, and with his knowledge and experience, he was recognized and shortlisted in the 2022 4As Kidlat Awards for his work as the co-arranger for DITO Telecommunications' "Galing Dito." The music Xeric creates cannot be confined to one single genre - his musical craft travels through time, from old soul 30s to 2020s KPOP.
Having a passion for music is only one side of the record. On side B, you’ll find the effort and dedication to pour your heart and soul into it. According to Xeric, practicing everyday is not enough! “Practice 8 days a week”, he said. Push yourself farther than you ever thought possible. Another piece of advice he pulled out of his back pocket was, “Listening to different genres of music is a must!!!” which has been tried and tested by Xeric himself. Having a niche genre is already great alone, but if you have what it takes to master more, then what’s stopping you?
